Dear Friends of STAY COOL for Grandkids,

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. STAY COOL wants to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of you who have stuck with us through another year of online Member Meetings and Webinars, Newsletters, and our Book Club. Your participation and generous donations confirm the value of our primary mission, which is to raise awareness about climate action on behalf of those who are too young to speak up.

I want to highlight some of our activities this year and celebrate the wonderful STAY COOL Advisors who have stepped up to make it all happen.  You can find out who they are here.

We had three webinars that were very well attended and incredibly informative.  In March,  “Got Gas? Building Electrification in San Diego County;” in May, “Landscapes for Life: Nature-Based Solutions for a Changing Climate;” in October, “The Ocean is a Climate Superhero: Part One.” If you would like to tune into any that you missed, they are on our YouTube station here.

We produced five “COOL News” newsletters filled with local updates as well as state, national and international highlights, along with opportunities for you to engage in creating a better legacy for future generations. If you missed a COOL News edition, you can find them online here.

This year we launched the STAY COOL Book Club. We read and discussed three insightful books:  Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer; Beloved Beasts by Michelle Nijhuis; and Blowout by Rachel Maddow. Next will be Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers and the Future of Food in America by Liz Carlisle. If you are interested in joining our next ZOOM meeting in early 2023, please contact sdstaycool4grandkids@gmail.com.

The Youth Education team continued to improve and expand our Ocean Climate Science program for 6th grade science classes.  With presentations led by graduate students from UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography and facilitated by STAY COOL volunteers, students are engaged in hands-on, science-driven lessons on how carbon emissions affect oceans. We are crossing our fingers that a recently submitted grant application will help develop an additional lesson for our program about coastal wetlands. We hope to augment this lesson with guided visits to the Kendall-Frost Marsh and want to expand our program’s reach to Title I schools with transportation to bring students to the marsh.  If you would like more information about our Ocean Climate Science program, please contact sdstaycool4grandkids@gmail.com.

There is more that we should do in the San Diego region to raise awareness of the challenges and solutions to the climate crisis, but that requires additional funding and volunteers. On behalf of myself and the STAY COOL Advisory Council, thank you for considering a donation of time and/or money. With your help, we can begin 2023 stronger than ever!

Sincerely,

Linda Giannelli Pratt, Chairperson
STAY COOL for Grandkids Advisory Council
